Wigs for Kids
When children lose their hair, whether as a result of medical treatments, health conditions, or burn accidents, they don’t just suffer physically. The change in their appearance can drastically undermine their self-image and sabotage their self-esteem.
Wigs for Kids designs custom full-cranium prosthetics, or wigs, for children and adults who lost their hair due to medical conditions. To this day, each handcrafted wig is made of about 150,000 strands of natural hair. The individual strands of hair are hand-tied onto the foundation of the wig, which is created from a mold of the person’s head for a snug fit.
Designing wigs for children is complicated because kids are smaller and more active than adults. Founder, Jeffrey Paul, worked with doctors and prosthetic specialists to devise a hairpiece that would withstand typical kid activities, such as swimming, gymnastics, and sleepovers. They came up with a wig that adhered to the scalp under the most aggressive conditions. And if it got wet, it would look like everyone else’s hair, because every strand of hair was hand-tied.
It takes approximately 15 -25 ponytails to create a hair system. If you are interested in donating to this organization and your hair meets the criteria, please contact us at 512-733-2426 for an appointment!
Criteria for making a hair donation:
1. Hair must be clean and dry. (Hair that has been cut and saved is suitable
for donations.)
2. Minimum length of hair donation is 12+ inches. (Pull curly hair straight
to measure.)
3. Gray hair is acceptable.
4. We cannot accept hair that has been chemically processed, no perms, colors
or highlighting.
5. You will receive notification that we have received your hair within 6 weeks
or less. Please be sure to print the information on the form provided to
send along with your hair donation. If we cannot read the information you
may not get an acknowledgment.
6. Hair donations are not tax deductible
7. We are not able to accept dreadlocks, as it is not feasible to hand sew them
into our custom-made hairpieces.
More Information
Wigs for Kids appreciates a donation with each ponytail to help offset the costs involved in processing and production of hairpieces. The cost of one hair piece can range from $1,800 – $3,000 . It takes 15-25 ponytails to create one hairpiece.
Wigs for Kids is a private non-profit organization relying solely on donations. Through caring companies, foundations, groups and individuals, like you, we can continue to provide COMPLIMENTARY hair replacement systems to children who would otherwise not be able to afford them.
